Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center | Proton Therapy Lab

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Lombardi Cancer Center is the only Washington Metro area facility to earn the National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center certification. For this project, Forrester Construction renovated and expanded the facility to improve patient access to the newest, life-saving treatments available. This involved installing a proton therapy lab that provides targeted radiation treatments. The Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center is the first in the capital region to offer this cutting-edge technology.

A new four-story, 6,800 square foot cast-in-place addition houses the proton therapy accelerator vault. To block radiation, the structure’s concrete wall sections are up to 10 feet thick in some areas. This renovation project also involved remodeling 10,000 square feet in the existing building to accommodate the lab’s administrative functions and increase office space on other floors. Additional work included demolition, sheeting and shoring, site utility relocation, storefront replacement, mechanical, electrical and plumbing system upgrades, interior finish and casework and landscaping.
