Public Welfare Foundation

For this project, Forrester Construction renovated the historic True Reformer building for the Public Welfare Foundation to house the organization’s offices as well as the African American Civil War museum.  The Public Welfare Foundation (PWF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting groups that provide services to individuals who are disadvantaged.

Built in 1903, the True Reformer building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as it was the first building in DC to be built, financed and owned by African Americans. During the renovation, the building was carefully restored with special attention paid to preserving its unique details. A wooden arch where boxer Joe Louis once hung his punching bag was left intact. The rest of the building was remodeled. The foundation’s offices are located on the top two floors with a main lobby and meeting spaces occupying the first floor.
