Embassy of Malawi
The Embassy of Malawi, located on historic Embassy Row on Northwest Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., is the home of the Ambassador of the southeastern African nation. This Forrester Construction building’s renovation involved extensive structural repairs resulting from fire damage. This necessitated the replacement of concrete masonry unit walls, floor joists, and structural steel reinforcements. Work also involved the addition of a new wing and ADA compliance upgrades The Forrester project team also installed high-end finishes including floor to ceiling glass walls, upgraded utilities and improved mechanical, sprinkler, fire alarm and information technology systems.
Another important part of this project was preserving the building’s historic character. The limestone facade was thoroughly cleaned, the main entrance was refurbished and the wood floors, fire places and grand staircase were all refinished. Although modern bullet resistant entrance systems were installed as a part of this project, great care was taken to ensure that these upgrades did not compromise the embassy’s original architecture.
